old world glamour & a little bit sexy :: Katelyn Aslett

Katelyn Aslett is my gorgeous friend and a unique artisan fashion designer. She creates garments that inspire joy, passion and beauty. The collection features her own fabrics designed using felting and digital printing onto beautiful silks.

Katelyn unveiled her new collection that was inspired by the glamour of the 50′s at Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival in Brisbane last week. Gorgeous silk satin lingerie and flowing silk gowns like the “Some Like it Hot” romance print dress floated down the catwalk, and was accessorised with Kathy Mclay jewellery and dramatic headwear by Cherries on Top Hats.

    Valentino :: Paris Haute Couture spring/summer 2013

Le silence de tournesols ~ the silence of sunflowers.

Breath-taking dresses of luxe embroidery, crystal beading, cording, lace of multi-colored flowers and hand-painted organza from Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli for the Valentino spring summer 2013 Haute Couture collection is magical.  The collection was inspired by  labyrinths, where nature meets architecture and science meets spiritual rebirth.

Style revealed the incredible skill involved in creating these gowns.

One  extraordinary dress featured layer upon layer of organza, embroidered with butterflies and birds, the whole lot wrapped in a tulle cage scrolled with crepe piping. According to the notes, it took 500 hours of hand-rolling to produce the piping in just one dress. One roller apparently developed carpal tunnel syndrome during the production of the collection. There were plenty more such examples of artisanal effort ~ it took 850 hours to embroider an organza jacket and skirt.

The analogy the designers employed was a garden, where you see the grace and delicacy, but you never smell the gardener’s sweat. “Couture has to be magical,” insisted Piccioli, and that clearly included the power to make the graft disappear.

    make do and mend

Eco-friendly editorial ‘Make Do and Mend’ featured in Vogue UK 2009 recycles ordinary household objects and turns them into couture garments. Polish beauty Malgosia Bela models the DIY recycled regalia the dollar-conscious couture creations that cost $10-$250 to make. And they were captured by my favourite photographer, Tim Walker!

    Valentino Spring 2013

Delicate embroidery, intricate beading and brocade ~ the valentino spring collection was full of creations inspired by memories of Rome.

a collection that trod its own path, an authentically Roman road back to a point in the Italian forties and fifties that resonates gently with the the way of the world now. Think of raven-haired, voluptuous “passionatas” in their slips and devout Catholic ladies on their way to mass—and then lay them aside for a second. Sarah Mower, Vogue

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccoli’s Spring 2013 collection for Valentino at Paris Fashion Week.

An ode to “The Ice Queen and Her Court”

Ice queen inspiration :: Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2011/12 Collection ~ I’m coveting it all!

“I was thinking about an ice queen. Someone strong and noble and romantically powerful.”

Sarah Burton describing her Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 2011 collection.

Inspired by ‘The Ice Queen and her Court’

the muse of the collection is strong yet beautiful, regal yet romantic – all beautifully translated into the collection.

And there was a Gothic Ice Queen along with bondage harnesses and exposed zippers that graced the catwalk.
